THE RUN GEORDIE RUN MISSION
My name is Mark Allison and in my spare time I'm a volunteer fundraiser. I'm currently on a fundraising campaign to run 20,000 miles Around The World in aid of charities in the North East of England.
Whilst not pursuing a world record, the run is following two aspects of the Guinness World Record criteria used, not in running, but in cycling for “fastest circumnavigation of the globe by bicycle”; To travel a minimum of 18,000 miles (28,968 km) and to travel through two approximate antipodal points (i.e. opposite points on the planet).
The purpose of using the criteria is to, at least, give credibility to the claim that I will “run around the world”.
The distance of my chosen route is 20,000 miles (32,189 km). The chosen antipodal points are La Coruña in Spain and Christchurch in New Zealand.
The run Around The World is split into 9 stages, some of which have been completed already:
Stage 1 - 2007 - UK - John O'Groats to Lands End. 874 miles in 37 days. (£51,634 raised)
Stage 2 - 2011 - USA - Huntington Beach, California to Coney Island New York. 3100 miles in 100 days. (£105,717.80 raised)
Stage 3 - 2013 - Australia - Cottesloe Beach, Perth to Shellharbour, Sydney. 2384 miles in 82 days. (£55,126.60 raised)
Stage 4 - 2016 - Western Europe - Lisbon, Portugal to Belgrade, Serbia. 2633 miles in 83 days. (£55,147.25 raised)
Stage 5 - 2018 - Eastern Europe - Belgrade, Serbia to Kiev, Ukraine. 808 miles (unsupported) in 48 days. (£59,041.50 raised)
The next stage is:
Stage 6 - Code name #Impossible2024 (currently in the planning stage)
The future stages are:
Stage 7 - The Road to Astana. Kiev, Ukraine to Astana, Kazakhstan via Russia. 2100 miles.
Stage 8 - China - Astana, Kazakhstan to Shanghai, China. 3500 miles.
Stage 9 - Japan - Cape Sata to Cape Soya. 2300 miles.
Stage 10 - New Zealand - Northerly tip of North Island to Southerly tip of South Island. 2100 miles.
In total, that's 20,000 miles around the world, on 4 continents, through 20 countries.
